Lumsden Cup History
First contested in 1926, the Lumsden Cup was established to honour John Lumsden, a pioneering figure in Irish golf. A founding member of The Royal Dublin Golf Club and former Vice President of the Golfing Union of Ireland, Lumsden was instrumental in the early development of the game. He famously laid out Ireland’s first 18-hole course in the Phoenix Park in 1885 and hosted the country’s first inter-club match later that year.
The competition, presented by Lumsden’s sons, Sir John and Hugh Lumsden, continues to celebrate this heritage. Once rotated between various Leinster venues, it now has a permanent home at Royal Dublin, where it is run by the Club’s Tournament Committee.
Former Champions
The Lumsden Cup is steeped in history and has seen victory by some of Ireland’s most accomplished amateurs:
In 2024, the title was claimed by Mark Cadden of Roganstown Golf Club, pictured below holding the trophy in the Christy O’Connor Room.
